A Kaduna State Chief Magistrates’ Court handed down an eight-month prison sentence to teenager Kefas Dauda on Wednesday.
Dauda, a resident of the Barnawa area in Kaduna, found himself in this predicament due to the theft of a laptop and two cellphones, which collectively amounted to over N700,000.
Charged with trespass and theft, Dauda, upon entering a plea of guilty, faced the stern judgment of Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who left him with no option of a fine.
Additionally, he was ordered to either compensate the complainant, Williams Timothy, with the sum of N237,450 or return the stolen phones.
This ruling carries profound implications as it serves as a stark warning to those contemplating similar unlawful actions.
The case, initially reported by Timothy on September 29 at the Barnawa police station, revealed that Dauda had unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence and made off with an official laptop valued at N450,000.
Furthermore, he trespassed into another house in the same community, making off with two phones valued at N225,000.
In a separate incident from July of the same year, Dauda intruded into the house of Shehu Hassan within the same community and pilfered a plasma television worth N84,000.
Prosecution counsel Chidi Leo emphasized that all the stolen items, including the phones and television, were sold to an individual named Raymond, who is currently at large.
Although the laptop was eventually recovered and returned to its owner, the fate of the stolen phones and television remains uncertain.
Dauda’s actions fall under the purview of Sections 98 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017, underlining the gravity of his transgressions.
