Telecommunications giants in Nigeria, including MTN and Airtel, have proposed a 100% increase in service tariffs to address escalating operational costs.
The proposal has been submitted to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for consideration.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, disclosed this during an interview on Arise TV, highlighting the severe financial pressures faced by the telecom sector due to inflation and increased service delivery expenses.
“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100% tariff increases to regulators. I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,” Toriola stated.
Toriola emphasized the need for the tariff adjustment to ensure the sustainability of the telecommunications industry, which is grappling with mounting financial challenges.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding NCC’s approval, he expressed optimism that the regulators would consider the sector’s realities and make an informed decision.
The proposal, if approved, could significantly impact millions of Nigerians who rely on telecom services daily.
Industry analysts have noted that while such a hike could stabilize the operations of telecom companies, it may also exacerbate the economic hardship experienced by subscribers.
The NCC has yet to comment on the proposal, leaving stakeholders in anticipation of a decision that could reshape Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
