Tension Escalates As Protests Erupt in Kano LGA Over Governorship Dispute

In a dramatic turn of events, thousands of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) supporters flooded the streets of Rogo Local Government Area in Kano on Saturday.

The protesters were demanding a fair judgement from the apex court regarding the governorship dispute between Abba Yusuf and Nasir Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The demonstrators, fervently seeking divine intervention, commenced their protest with a prayer session before taking to the streets, brandishing placards adorned with various inscriptions.

However, the peaceful march quickly descended into chaos, with reports of a vehicle set ablaze amid the escalating tensions.

In response to the unrest, the police swiftly imposed a ban on all political gatherings and protests within and outside the metropolis.

This move aims to restore order and prevent further incidents of violence.

The genesis of the controversy dates back to December 21, 2023, when the Supreme Court reserved judgement in Yusuf’s appeal challenging the decisions of both the Court of Appeal and the State Election Petitions Tribunal.

These earlier rulings had unseated Yusuf from office, declaring Gawuna as the rightful winner.

The five-member panel, led by Justice John Okoro, deferred its judgement after the parties presented their brief of arguments, leaving the fate of Kano’s gubernatorial leadership hanging in the balance.
