Palpable tension has gripped Kano state in anticipation of the forthcoming governorship election tribunal judgment scheduled for Wednesday.o
As at Tuesday, there was deployment of security forces at key locations in the state.
Supporters of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) await the tribunal’s verdict to be delivered at Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, convened a meeting of all security chiefs in the state on Tuesday evening, where comprehensive strategies were devised to handle the situation.
In a statement released by the police on Tuesday night, it was affirmed that security agencies are fully prepared to safeguard lives and property during the tribunal’s pronouncement.
The State Police Command has also issued guidelines ahead of the judgment.
The statement, signed by the Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of Commissioner of Police Mr. Gumel, assured residents of a peaceful and orderly environment before, during, and after the tribunal’s verdict.
According to the statement: “In light of the Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal judgment scheduled for Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Muhammad Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc, in collaboration with other heads of security agencies and the tribunal secretariat operating in the state, has deployed an ample number of personnel and equipment to identified strategic locations to ensure the security of lives and property and to prevent any attempt to disrupt peace or incite disorder.
“While the police and security agencies in the state pledge adequate security for the good people of the state throughout the tribunal judgment proceedings, residents of Kano state are also urged to do their part in preserving law and order.
“In light of this, the following advisories are issued: Avoid congregating or participating in large-scale violent activities, processions, protests, or celebrations that may incite violence.
“The public is reminded that only individuals with proper identification will be granted access to the tribunal premises (Miller Road).
“Using cameras, smartphones, or any means to transmit portions of the judgment will be considered contempt, and violators will be held accountable.
“Cautious speech that could unnecessarily heighten tension or undermine security measures and the sanctity of the judicial system should be avoided.
“Overall, CP Gumel assures the peace-loving residents of Kano that the police will not tolerate any unruly individuals who might attempt to disrupt security arrangements, and as such, residents are encouraged to continue their daily routines with confidence.”
