A former senior security official, Ali-Keffi, has called for a full-scale investigation into the handling of terrorism financing cases and the management of counterterrorism funds in Nigeria, warning that shocking revelations could emerge if ongoing probes are made public.
Ali-Keffi made the call while speaking on the state of national security accountability, insisting that the operations of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) under the Office of the Special Whistleblower (OSW) should be subjected to greater transparency.
“If the NFIU under OSW should ever make its investigations public, I can assure you there will be a tsunami in Nigeria,” he said.
According to him, several high-ranking officials across the military and government institutions, including prominent members of the National Assembly, could be implicated in alleged financial improprieties linked to counterterrorism efforts.
“Many military and government officials, including distinguished members of the National Assembly, would be implicated,” Ali-Keffi added.
He described the alleged diversion and mismanagement of funds meant to combat terrorism as a grave threat to national security, arguing that corruption within the system undermines the fight against insurgency and violent extremism.
Ali-Keffi urged the Federal Government to institute an independent and comprehensive probe into the deployment of security votes, defence budgets and counterterrorism funds, stressing that accountability and transparency were critical to restoring public confidence and strengthening national security operations.
He further called on anti-graft agencies and relevant oversight bodies to collaborate with the NFIU to ensure that all cases of terrorism financing are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted without fear or favour.
