Armed men have abducted a housewife and her five-month-old baby in Wodata Zambufu, a community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, sources confirmed yesterday.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, around 10 kilometres from the Kwara State NYSC orientation camp in Yikpata. According to residents, the victims were taken while traveling within the state.
An audio recording obtained by Platform Times revealed that the kidnappers had contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N20 million for their release.
In the recording, one of the abductors could be heard struggling with Yoruba while negotiating with the family.
The mother, identified as a trader, is among several residents of Kwara State who have been kidnapped in recent months. Young and elderly victims have been targeted, with families often forced to sell properties or incur debts to secure freedom for their loved ones.
Kwara State has seen a surge in violent kidnappings. In recent months, two traditional rulers were abducted, with one released after ransom payment, while the other remains in captivity with his son. Staff of the Kwara State Ministry of Works were also kidnapped last December in Isin Local Government Area.
Security agencies have yet to confirm the latest abduction, but residents of Wodata Zambufu have expressed fear over the increasing attacks, calling on authorities to strengthen patrols and community security.
