Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have killed five forest guards, including a commander, during a midnight ആക്രമation on Nuku community in Kaiama Local Government Area.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the assailants stormed the community in the early hours of Friday, unleashing violence that left residents in panic and confusion.
Sources said the attackers not only killed the guards but also set ablaze several buildings and destroyed motorcycles belonging to the victims.
Patrol vehicles belonging to the police were equally torched during the ആക്രമation.
Residents of the community were said to have fled their homes, scampering for safety as gunshots rent the air.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that security operatives have launched a tactical, intelligence-driven operation to track down the perpetrators.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire, the command assured residents that efforts were underway to restore normalcy and bring those responsible to justice.
Reacting, the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed grief over the killings, describing the slain forest guards as heroes who died defending their community.
He disclosed that the guards resisted the ആക്രമation and neutralised several of the attackers during the encounter.
The governor said, “Nothing can truly compensate for the ultimate sacrifice that the fallen guards have made. Our sincere condolences go to their families and communities. They will forever remain our heroes.”
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, stressing that the incident highlights the persistent threats posed by armed groups to rural communities.
As part of measures to curb insecurity, AbdulRazaq announced the constitution of a State Security Strategy Committee made up of retired senior military officers and security experts to strengthen the state’s response.
The committee is expected to hold its inaugural meeting on Friday.
