Tragedy struck in Obidi, Agwa community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday, as a thunderstorm reportedly killed three persons and left four others injured.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the unusual incident, which occurred on April 8, 2025, has sparked fear among residents who described the thunderstorm as mysterious because it was not accompanied by heavy rainfall.
An elder in the community, Mr. Nze Ike, who confirmed the development said those injured are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
“It was just a little rain in the community on Tuesday, but the impact of the thunderstorm hit three people, and they died instantly. As I speak with you, four people are still in the hospital,” Ike said.
He explained that the lightning struck a large tree under which several people had taken shelter, resulting in the casualties.
“Our community was alleged to have killed the traditional ruler some time back. Some people are scared it may have been a sign of sacrilege because we have not seen anything like this before,” he added.
Some residents have reportedly asked their family members to suspend trips to the village until the fear around the incident subsides.
A community leader, Mr. Collins Ughalla, described the incident as a major tragedy, recalling that the last such occurrence in the area was in the 1980s.
“We’re still mourning. May the Lord rest their souls,” he said.
The incident has continued to generate tension as residents seek answers to what they describe as an unprecedented natural disaster.
