Three operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have sustained gunshot injuries following a violent ambush by yet-to-be-identified gunmen during an anti-narcotics operation in the Jahi area of Abuja.
The operatives were said to have come under fire late Thursday night while exiting an uncompleted building that had been raided based on intelligence reports indicating it was being used to store illicit drugs.
A statement issued on Friday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the attack occurred shortly after NDLEA personnel concluded the operation and were departing the premises.
“Three of the NDLEA personnel involved in the raid sustained gunshot injuries: one in the rib and two others on their back and leg,” Babafemi said.
He explained that the wounded operatives were initially treated at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for more intensive care.
Items recovered during the raid included 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol 225mg, 4.9 kilograms of skunk (a potent strain of cannabis), and five android phones.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), who was in Kano for official duties at the time of the incident, was said to have spoken directly with the injured officers to encourage them and wish them a quick recovery.
Marwa also expressed appreciation to the medical staff at both the Police Clinic and the National Hospital, including the Chief Medical Director, for their prompt response and treatment of the injured personnel.
Vowing a thorough investigation, the NDLEA boss assured that the agency would work in synergy with other security agencies to track down those behind the attack.
“No stone will be left unturned in fishing out the criminals responsible for this cowardly assault,” Marwa pledged.
