Residents of Kano were gripped by fear on Friday after three siblings died within hours of each other from a yet-to-be-identified illness in the Fagge Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the victims, aged 15, eight and four, reportedly developed high fever which rapidly worsened, leading to their deaths in less than 24 hours.
A relative of the deceased, Muhammadu Mado, said the tragedy began with the youngest child, Ikram Yunusa, who fell ill overnight and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was confirmed dead on arrival.
He disclosed that the situation escalated shortly after when her elder sister, Khadija Mannir, 15, also developed similar symptoms and died hours after being discharged from the Infectious Disease Hospital.
“The pattern continued when the third child, eight-year-old Halima Mannir, showed identical symptoms and also passed away,” he said, noting that the deaths occurred within 12 hours.
The incident has thrown residents of the Layin ‘Yan Katifa community into panic, with many calling on authorities to urgently uncover the cause of the mysterious illness and prevent further spread.
Officials of the Kano State Ministry of Health have since visited the affected residence and commenced investigations, including the collection of environmental samples.
Spokesperson for the ministry, Abubakar Nabulusi, confirmed that efforts were underway to determine the cause of the deaths, assuring that findings would be made public upon conclusion of the probe.
The development comes amid heightened concerns over public health safety in the state.
In a separate incident, reports indicated that no fewer than seven children died in a single day at the bustling Kantin Kwari textile market during the peak of Sallah shopping, allegedly due to overcrowding and extreme heat.
Residents have urged health authorities to act swiftly to forestall a possible outbreak and reassure the public.
