At least three persons were trapped beneath rubble on Tuesday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred at about 3pm at the Otta-Ona junction, threw the neighbourhood into panic as rescue workers battled to save those trapped.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that nine persons had been rescued as of press time.

Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that LASEMA received a distress call at 2:02pm and mobilised a response team that arrived at the scene by 2:40pm.

“Upon arrival, a two-storey building under construction was discovered to have collapsed, with three persons still trapped under the debris,” Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement.

He added that no fatalities had been recorded yet and that the agency’s Tiger and Lion response teams immediately commenced search-and-rescue operations.

“Our excavator has been deployed and is currently aiding the search for the remaining victims. The operational area has been cordoned off, and safety measures are in place,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the collapse was yet to be determined, while emergency officials continued rescue efforts at the site.
