Three unarmed women were on Saturday brutally murdered while working on their farmland as renewed communal violence between Bachama and Chobo communities flared up in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed that the women were attacked on January 3, 2026, on a farm near Tigno village, allegedly by suspected Bachama youths amid the resurgence of the long-running tribal conflict in the area.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, described the killings as fallout from what he termed a “renewed Lamurde tribal conflict.”
“The Adamawa State Police Command has swiftly responded to the renewed Lamurde tribal conflict between the Bachama and Chobo, which led to the killing of three women at their farm around Tigno village, Lamurde Local Government Area,” Nguroje said.
He disclosed that police operatives, acting on credible intelligence, arrested two suspects in connection with the attack. The suspects were identified as William Joshua, 30, and Ezekiel Luka, 23, both residents of Tigno in Lamurde LGA.
According to the police, preliminary investigations led to the recovery of 29 rounds of live ammunition, one AK-47 rifle magazine and the sum of N90,000 from the suspects, indicating the involvement of armed elements in the deadly assault.
Nguroje added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has appealed for calm in the volatile community, assuring residents that justice would be served.
“The Commissioner of Police has appealed for calm as the Command is doing everything humanly and legally possible to bring the perpetrators and their instigators to book,” he stated.
He further noted that the suspects are currently in custody and are aiding investigation, while security operatives have intensified patrols in the area to forestall reprisals and further breakdown of law and order.
The killing of the women, described by residents as innocent farmers with no links to the communal dispute, has triggered outrage and fear in Lamurde, once again underscoring the deadly toll of recurring communal conflicts on vulnerable civilians in Nigeria.
