In its latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, TikTok, the popular short video platform owned by Bytedance, revealed that it had removed 1.4 million videos uploaded by Nigerian users during the third quarter of 2023.
The deletion was attributed to violations of the company’s policies.
The report also highlighted a significant crackdown on fraudulent and spam accounts, with 73.6 million accounts being deleted during the same period.
TikTok emphasized its commitment to maintaining a secure and authentic user environment, taking action against various forms of deceptive activities.
Among the alarming statistics disclosed were the removal of 348.7 million likes on videos, shedding light on the scale of inauthentic engagement. Additionally, TikTok addressed the issue of fake follow requests, with a staggering 7.2 billion such requests being deleted.
The platform also removed 211.3 million fake followers, emphasizing that these actions were a result of automated or inauthentic mechanisms.
TikTok acknowledged the dynamic nature of external threats and the continuous efforts by attackers to exploit vulnerabilities in their systems.
The company stated, “There are periodic variations in the reported metrics in these regions due to these attackers’ continual probing and attacking of our systems.”
However, TikTok remained resolute in its commitment to swiftly identifying and eliminating any accounts, materials, or actions that aimed to manipulate users’ popularity on the platform.
The company reassured users of its dedication to maintaining a secure and authentic community, despite the challenges posed by external threats.
This move by TikTok reflects the ongoing struggle of social media platforms to combat fraudulent activities and maintain user trust.
