President Bola Tinubu on Saturday attended the 61st edition of the annual Argungu International Fishing Festival in Kebbi State, pledging support for the promotion of the centuries-old cultural event to global prominence.
The President arrived in Argungu amid colourful displays of culture and tradition, with hundreds of local and international tourists thronging the historic town for the globally recognised fishing competition.
In a post on X, presidential spokesman Sunday Dare described the festival as a cultural asset that deserves global ranking.
“Argungu is ready for Mr President! A festival such as the Argungu Festival, with international colour and originality, must be developed to rank among the most celebrated in the world.
A delight to see many tourists around in Argungu as the President arrives,” Dare wrote.
Tinubu, flanked by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, was seen interacting with participants and spectators.
At a point, the President expressed amazement as one of the largest fish caught during the contest was hoisted and prepared for weighing.
The Argungu festival, one of Nigeria’s oldest cultural events, features hundreds of fishermen diving into the Argungu River armed with traditional nets, competing to catch the biggest fish within a stipulated time.
A panel of judges weighs the catches, with the fisherman whose catch records the highest weight declared winner at the end of the competition.
The festival, which has evolved into an international tourism spectacle, also showcases cultural dances, traditional music, agricultural exhibitions and local cuisines, attracting visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
Stakeholders say sustained government investment and global branding could further position the festival as a major tourism driver capable of boosting Kebbi State’s economy and preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the annual event remains a symbol of unity and communal pride for the people of Kebbi, while serving as a platform for cultural diplomacy and economic stimulation.
