— Says He Avoided Watching Final Over Blood Pressure Fears
President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, in a colourful presidential reception at the State House, Abuja, following their historic victory over Morocco at the just-concluded Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Addressing the jubilant players, Tinubu confessed that he initially refrained from watching the tense final match for fear of aggravating his blood pressure.
“I didn’t want to watch the match initially because I don’t want high blood pressure,” the president said to laughter from the audience. “My wife was cooking in the kitchen when she rushed out and said, ‘we have won!’”
The Super Falcons edged out Morocco in a gripping 3-2 contest at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, securing the country’s 12th WAFCON title and reinforcing their dominance on the African football scene.
In honour of their triumph, President Tinubu conferred national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each member of the squad and coaching crew.
He also announced a cash reward of $100,000 (naira equivalent) for each player, and $50,000 for each technical official.
All members of the team will receive a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme as part of a broader gesture to appreciate their service to the nation.
“You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” Tinubu said.
“You have also inspired me. Your victory represents more than a sporting accomplishment—it is a triumph of resilience, unity, and national pride.”
Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the players, dedicated the title to Nigerians.
“This victory is for every young girl in our villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream,” she said. “It is also for every Nigerian who carries our green and white flag with pride.”
President Tinubu had earlier sent a presidential delegation to Morocco to support the team during the tournament.
In a previous statement, he described their performance as “awe-inspiring” and a symbol of Nigeria’s strength, determination, and unity.
