President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday urged Tunji Disu, the newly appointed acting inspector-general of police (IGP), to lead the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) with discipline and restore public confidence in the institution.
The president made the remarks at the State House during the decoration of Disu, who assumed the role following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
Tinubu tasked Disu with confronting rising insecurity, including banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities across the country.
He stressed the need for professionalism, inter-agency collaboration, and prioritising the safety of lives and property.
“I expect you to strengthen discipline, enhance interagency coordination, and restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police,” Tinubu said.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure the safety of lives and property remains your highest priority.”
The president described Disu as a “straightforward individual, committed and respected,” encouraging him to draw from Egbetokun’s experience to improve the force.
He also thanked Egbetokun for his dedication, noting that the former IGP had set the stage for a seamless transition.
“Nigeria is a grateful nation to you. Your success would not have been complete without a good successor. Tunji Disu is now that successor,” Tinubu added.
For his part, Egbetokun expressed confidence in Disu’s ability to continue ongoing reforms.
Speaking at the ceremony, he said, “I am happy he is taking over.
He has been part of the initiatives to strengthen operations, improve intelligence coordination, and dismantle criminal networks. I am confident he will sustain these efforts.”
Egbetokun, who served as Tinubu’s Chief Security Officer in Lagos before his tenure as IGP, praised the president for mentorship and guidance that shaped both their careers.
“A good leader must invest in successors. I am glad that one of those I invested in has been found most suitable for the role,” he said.
Acting IGP Disu, who was principal staff officer under Egbetokun and held key leadership positions in Rivers State, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Special Protection Unit, thanked the president for the appointment, describing it as “humbling and emotional.”
