President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, condemned the recent protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asserting that the Labour movement is not the exclusive voice of the people.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Lagos Red Line Train connecting Agbado to Oyingbo, Tinubu addressed the NLC’s Tuesday protest, warning them of their perceived overreach.
The Labour Union had staged a protest earlier in the week, citing hardships in the nation and the federal government’s failure to implement agreements with unions.
However, President Tinubu, in his remarks, criticized the Labour Union, stating that despite their rights and freedoms, they cannot effectively oppose an administration that is just nine months old.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing reforms, despite resistance from what he labeled as ‘smugglers.’
He underlined the government’s determination to eradicate corruption, acknowledging the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the exchange rate.
“There is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel. Nigeria will overcome its economic problems; we just need perseverance and hard work,” declared President Tinubu, urging citizens to endure the temporary hardships.
In a pointed message to the Labour Union, Tinubu emphasized, “Allow me to throw a jab here.
The Labour Union should understand that they are not the sole bearers of freedom and rights. If they wish to participate in the electoral process, meet us in 2027.
If not, maintain peace. You are not the exclusive voice of Nigeria.”
The President underscored the significance of the commissioning of the red line, expressing that it marked the realization of a vision he had nurtured 25 years ago during his tenure as the governor of the state.
Tinubu also called for increased collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and other states to develop railway infrastructures across the country.
Amidst the economic challenges facing Nigeria, President Tinubu’s stern words not only assert the government’s resilience in the face of opposition but also set the stage for future political engagements.
The call for the NLC to actively participate in the electoral process in 2027 echoes a broader message of unity and shared responsibility in the nation’s political landscape.
