President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, officially declared open the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games 2024, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President described the biennial event as a vital platform for national unity, cohesion, and a symbol of renewed hope for Nigerians.
“Indeed, nothing has brought the nation together like sport — whether on the pitch, in the court, or on the track,” Tinubu stated.
“We are reminded daily that we are not strangers to one another, but compatriots drawn from different roots, drinking from the same well of national pride.”
Highlighting his administration’s recognition of sports as a vehicle for national integration and development, Tinubu announced the reorganization of sports administration into an autonomous National Sports Commission.
“For decades, sport has placed Nigeria on the global map. It remains one of the strongest forces for unity and patriotism. We want a sports industry that is autonomous, innovative and focused because we recognize its critical role in building a healthier, stronger, and more united Nigeria,” he added.
The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in his welcome address, described the festival as more than a competition, calling it a celebration of unity, talent, and development.
“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to building a future where talent is nurtured, hard work is rewarded, and Ogun State remains a beacon of excellence,” the governor said.
“Our bid to host this event was driven by our unshakable belief in the transformative power of sports for socioeconomic development and youth empowerment.”
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, praised the President’s bold move to transition the former Federal Ministry of Sports into a full-fledged commission, noting that it marks the beginning of professionalism in Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
“This year’s festival takes a historic turn with the inclusion of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA),” Dikko revealed.
I’m in“Over 200 young athletes are participating — a first in the history of the NSF. Already, the IJAs have won two medals in golf. This is the only platform for these athletes to launch themselves into the global arena.”
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, also expressed deep emotion while addressing the audience, recalling his journey from commissioner to head of the main organizing committee.
“Nineteen years ago, I stood on this same track as a commissioner. Today, I stand before you as the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee. This is, without doubt, the best sports festival the country has witnessed,” Olopade declared. “We are convinced that this game will spur greater grassroots development.”
The vibrant opening ceremony featured a performance of the national and Ogun State anthems by popular percussionist, Ara, followed by energetic dance displays and the official launch of the festival’s theme song. The Vice President arrived at exactly 6:02 p.m. and was received by Governor Abiodun alongside other dignitaries already seated.
Among notable attendees were former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Speakers of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole and Muyiwa Oladipo; former governors of Ogun State, Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel; Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo; and Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi).
Others present included representatives of governors from Delta, Ekiti, Kogi, and Ondo States; members of the House of Representatives including Gboyega Isiaka; former Speakers Titi Oseni and Suraj Adekunbi; and the Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu.
Governor Abiodun noted that over 10,000 athletes are being hosted in Olympic-sized facilities across the state, with robust security arrangements in place to ensure a smooth and safe festival.
He also acknowledged governors Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmed Ododo (Kogi), and the Progressive Governors’ Forum for their support.
“Sports transcends ethnicity and tribe. Investing in sports is investing in our future,” Abiodun concluded.
The Gateway Games 2024 promises to be a celebration of the resilience, talent, and unity of Nigeria’s youth as they compete across various disciplines in the spirit of excellence.
