President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at a brief ceremony held at the State House, Abuja, signalling a new phase in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
The event, which took place at about 4pm inside the President’s office, was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Tinubu personally pinned the new rank insignia on Disu’s uniform and commended Egbetokun for what he described as his service and contributions to national security during his tenure.
Appointment Amid Retirement Timeline
Disu’s elevation comes barely 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he is due to attain the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, under the amended Police Act which provides a fixed four-year tenure for an Inspector-General of Police irrespective of age, Disu may remain in office beyond his 60th birthday and potentially serve until 2030, subject to the provisions of the law.
The development has sparked conversations within security and political circles over the interpretation of the tenure clause and its implications for succession planning within the Force.
The decoration ceremony followed the resignation of Egbetokun on Tuesday. He was said to have stepped down, citing family matters that require his personal attention.
Egbetokun’s exit, coming less than 24 hours before Disu’s decoration, marked a swift transition at the top echelon of the police hierarchy.
Security analysts say Disu’s immediate task will include consolidating ongoing reforms, strengthening internal discipline, and tackling persistent challenges such as violent crime, kidnapping, and communal unrest across parts of the country.
Expectations
Disu, a seasoned officer with decades of policing experience, is expected to outline his strategic direction in the coming days as stakeholders await signals on postings, operational priorities and possible restructuring within the Force Headquarters.
His appointment comes at a time when public scrutiny of law enforcement institutions remains high, with growing calls for improved professionalism, accountability and intelligence-driven policing.
