President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office to a special fund aimed at supporting personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families.
The President disclosed this in a personally signed statement on Sunday to mark his 74th birthday, describing the move as a tribute to the sacrifices of military officers serving the nation.
Tinubu said he had directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account for the fund, which will cater for wounded soldiers and families of fallen heroes.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” he said.
“I have directed the establishment of a special account for a fund dedicated to those who serve, those wounded in the line of duty, and the families of those who have paid the ultimate price.”
The President added that his decision to donate his entire salaries since taking office would serve as seed funding for the initiative.
“As a personal commitment, all my salaries since assuming office will be paid into this account, irrespective of existing insurance and welfare schemes,” he said.
According to him, the fund is designed to provide direct financial support to injured personnel, as well as widows, widowers and children of deceased soldiers.
Tinubu also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, private sector players and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative.
“I call on our governors, lawmakers, the private sector and all Nigerians to support this cause. Details of the account will be made available in due course,” he added.
The President emphasised that supporting members of the armed forces should be seen as a national responsibility rather than an act of charity.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity; it is duty,” he said.
