President Bola Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General (rtd) Mohammed Buba Marwa as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term, extending his leadership until 2031.
Marwa, an Adamawa State indigene, first assumed the position in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020.
The reappointment, announced on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, comes as a vote of confidence in Marwa’s leadership and the agency’s achievements in combating drug trafficking and abuse.
“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” Tinubu said.
“I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
Marwa’s tenure at the NDLEA has been marked by significant successes, including the arrest of 73,000 drug mules and barons and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit drugs. Under his leadership, the agency also mounted nationwide campaigns aimed at curbing drug abuse.
A former military governor of Lagos and Borno states, Marwa is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He also holds two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Over his military and diplomatic career, Marwa served as Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of Army Staff, and held advisory roles at Nigeria’s missions in Washington, DC, and the United Nations.
With his reappointment, Marwa is expected to continue leading the NDLEA’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s youth from the dangers of hard drugs.
