President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in recognition of his long-standing commitment to improving global health, education, and poverty alleviation—especially in Nigeria.

The event, held in Lagos, was attended by top dignitaries including Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, and business mogul Aliko Dangote, among other notable figures.

The award comes amid Gates’ working visit to Nigeria, where he is engaging with President Tinubu and other senior officials on ways to reform and strengthen the country’s primary healthcare system.

Gates is also expected to participate in the Goalkeepers Nigeria event—a platform that explores Africa’s innovation landscape.

During the visit, he will meet with Nigerian scientists and partners driving the country’s national strategy on artificial intelligence (AI) and efforts to scale healthcare solutions.

His visit follows the Gates Foundation’s recent announcement of a long-term $200 billion commitment aimed at improving lives over the next two decades, with a major focus on the African continent.

Over the years, the Gates Foundation has partnered with African institutions to support vaccine development, healthcare infrastructure, and disease control efforts.

Through global partnerships such as Gavi and the Global Fund, the foundation has contributed to saving more than 80 million lives—efforts that have had significant impact in Nigeria.
