President Bola Tinubu on Monday met with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the State House, Abuja, in what sources described as a decisive session focused on strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
The closed-door meeting came three days after the President announced a major shake-up in the military hierarchy — a move many analysts have interpreted as part of Tinubu’s renewed drive to curb insecurity and restore stability across the country.
Those in attendance included the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye, who retained his position.
Although the Presidency has yet to release full details of the deliberations, a source at the Villa told PLATFORM TIMES that the meeting centred on the administration’s top security priorities, counterterrorism operations, and measures to enhance coordination among the military services.
“The President emphasized the need for synergy, discipline, and visible results. He made it clear that Nigerians are tired of excuses and expect improved security outcomes under his watch,” the source said.
Tinubu’s latest appointments, announced last Friday, were described by the Presidency as a “strategic realignment” designed to deepen professionalism, boost troop morale, and foster inter-agency collaboration in national security management.
The reshuffle followed months of public agitation over worsening insecurity, including banditry, kidnappings, and insurgent attacks across parts of the country.
Meanwhile, political and public reactions have continued to trail the appointments. While some stakeholders, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, have congratulated the new military chiefs and expressed optimism about renewed vigour in Nigeria’s defence strategy, others have called for greater transparency in the sacking of their predecessors.
Tinubu, who has repeatedly vowed to make national security the cornerstone of his administration, is expected to unveil a comprehensive defence policy framework before the end of the year, sources hinted.
The meeting with the new Service Chiefs, insiders say, is only the first in a series of engagements aimed at reviewing and recalibrating Nigeria’s military operations in line with evolving threats.
President Tinubu had last week announced the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff. Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye retained his post as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
The move, coming amid heightened concerns over security lapses, signals Tinubu’s intent to inject fresh energy and strategic direction into the armed forces.
