In a significant move to honour one of Nigeria’s most celebrated literary figures, President Bola Tinubu has renamed the Arterial Road N20 from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) as the Professor Wole Soyinka Highway.

This decision came upon the recommendation of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration.

President Tinubu, in his announcement, highlighted the monumental achievements of Professor Wole Soyinka, noting that he was the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Soyinka, a distinguished playwright, poet, and novelist, received the Nobel Prize in 1986, becoming the first sub-Saharan African to be honoured in this category.

President Tinubu remarked that Soyinka’s contributions to literature have brought immense honor and fame to Nigeria, making this renaming a fitting tribute to his legacy.

The President also took the opportunity to commend the efforts of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and his team for their ongoing work in the capital city.

He expressed his appreciation for their dedication and contributions to the development and beautification of Abuja.

This renaming comes at a significant time as Professor Soyinka approaches his 90th birthday on July 13, 2024.

The gesture is seen not only as a celebration of his literary achievements but also as a recognition of his enduring impact on Nigerian culture and global literature.

The Federal Capital Territory administration’s recommendation and the subsequent approval by President Tinubu underscore the importance of honoring national icons who have excelled on the world stage.

The newly named Professor Wole Soyinka Highway is expected to serve as a lasting reminder of Soyinka’s profound influence and his role in elevating Nigerian literature to international prominence.
