President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by the SGF, George Akume.
According to the circular, the order is in compliance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 polls.
The document, which was also endorsed by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Kana, stated that the directive affects all categories of presidential appointees intending to participate in party primaries or contest for elective positions.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.
It further mandated that all affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the Office of the SGF on or before the stipulated deadline.
The President said the move was aimed at ensuring strict compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.
Tinubu also urged all concerned officials to adhere strictly to the directive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes.
