President Bola Tinubu has approved the sack of Nigeria’s service chiefs and announced the appointment of their replacements, in what is seen as a major shake-up in the nation’s security architecture.
The President’s decision was contained in a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Sunday Dare.
According to the statement, Tinubu named Major-General W. as the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke takes over as Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas was appointed Chief of Naval Staff.
The President had earlier appointed Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.
Tinubu, in the statement, said the changes were part of his administration’s renewed efforts to strengthen national security and enhance the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.
“The President expresses his most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other service chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement read.
“President Tinubu charges the newly appointed service chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them, to further enhance the professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” it added.
The President’s latest move comes amid sustained security challenges across parts of the country, with expectations high that the new military leadership will bring fresh energy and strategy to the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.
