President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday held a crucial closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s top security chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid rising nationwide security tensions and the sudden resignation of Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru.
The high-level meeting, which began at about midday, came less than 24 hours after Badaru tendered his resignation and as violent attacks, kidnappings and communal clashes intensify across several states.
A Presidential Villa source told PLATFORM TIMES that the President convened the session “to take swift and decisive briefing” from the nation’s security architecture following what insiders describe as “an increasingly fragile security climate.”
The service chiefs were led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede. Others in attendance included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General W. Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral I. Abbas; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lt. General Emmanuel Undiandeye; Director-General of the Department of State Services, Adeola Ajayi; and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Although details of the deliberations were not immediately released, a senior security official familiar with the meeting described it as “tense but focused,” adding that the President demanded updates on “ongoing operations, new threats and urgent actions required to stabilise affected regions.”
Another top officer said the President emphasised that Nigerians “must feel the impact of security reforms without delay,” especially with recent spikes in banditry, highway kidnappings and insurgent activities.
The meeting also comes on the heels of Tinubu’s nomination of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the new Minister of Defence, a move interpreted by analysts as an attempt to quickly close any vacuum created by Badaru’s exit.
Security analysts told PLATFORM TIMES that the President’s swift engagement with the security chiefs signals “a clear attempt to re-calibrate” the nation’s security strategy.
As of press time, the Presidency had yet to issue an official statement on resolutions reached at the closed-door session.
