President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured state governors that the federal government has no intention of encroaching on the autonomy of local government areas (LGAs) in the country.
Speaking during a New Year homage in Lagos by members of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized the importance of collaboration and local government autonomy in driving grassroots development and economic stability.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson, Tinubu urged governors to lead Nigeria’s agricultural revolution and ensure the effective operation of LGAs to foster progress at the grassroots level.
Addressing rumors of federal interference, Tinubu said, “There were gossips that we had disagreements on local government autonomy. No. Just drive development at the local government.
“Nobody wants to take them away from you, but we need collaboration. Let’s do it together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it.”
Highlighting the vital role of state governments in Nigeria’s prosperity, Tinubu noted, “The federal government accounts for about 30 to 35 percent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands.”
Tinubu stressed that a unified effort between federal and state governments was necessary to tackle key issues such as food security, local government empowerment, and economic growth.
He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the naira and enhancing Nigeria’s overall prosperity, adding, “We have to work harder, grow more, and ensure the situation of our currency improves. Together, we will build a nation we are all proud of.”
AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, NGF chairman and governor of Kwara, commended Tinubu’s agricultural policies, citing significant gains in food production and security.
He also encouraged the president to visit various states to witness their progress firsthand, a call Tinubu accepted with plans to visit Enugu on January 4.
