President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a nationwide agricultural mechanisation initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s farming sector, promising to make agriculture not only more productive but also appealing to the country’s youthful population.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja during the official flag-off of the programme under his administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, President Tinubu declared that modern equipment would soon replace archaic farming methods, thereby repositioning agriculture as a viable and exciting profession for Nigerian youths.
“This equipment, when deployed, will empower mechanisation and service providers, create job opportunities, make farming easy and more ‘sexy’ to our young ones,” the President said, to the applause of stakeholders present at the launch.
The initiative features the distribution of over 2,000 advanced tractors, 50 industrial-grade land preparation bulldozers, 12 mobile workshops, and more than 9,000 specialised farming implements, aimed at boosting productivity across the agricultural value chain.
“We envision Nigeria as a global agricultural powerhouse, supplying quality produce to international markets while ensuring every citizen has access to affordable nutritious food,” Tinubu added.
Emphasising the need for year-round farming, the President said the new strategy is designed to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on seasonal agriculture, which often leads to food shortages and price volatility.
To further drive youth engagement, Tinubu revealed that Nigeria is collaborating with Belarus and other global partners to provide training in modern agriculture techniques, machine operation, repairs, and fabrication.
“We have friends across the world. Belarus is committed to a programme that will empower our youth, teach them how to do things, get them off the streets, and equip them with modern mechanisation skills,” he stated.
President Tinubu stressed that the distribution of the equipment will be closely monitored, and that beneficiaries will be held accountable to ensure efficiency and sustainability of the programme.
“Let history recall this day as the beginning of a Nigerian agricultural renaissance—where modern technology meets our farmers’ legendary resilience to create unprecedented prosperity,” he said.
He also commended the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for its proactive approach to tackling the current food crisis and working toward long-term solutions.
The mechanisation programme is a major component of the Tinubu administration’s broader goal to achieve food sovereignty and agricultural independence through innovation, investment, and inclusive participation.
