President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration is committed to reclaiming Nigeria’s forests from terrorists by deploying advanced technology.
Speaking at a state dinner held at the Government House in Katsina on Friday, Tinubu emphasized the government’s determination to combat banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, particularly in the northwest region.
The President highlighted the critical role that technology and enhanced surveillance would play in regaining control of the vast forests that have become strongholds for terrorists and criminal groups.
“We will invest more in technology and take over the forests,” Tinubu declared, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to address the issue of insecurity head-on.
This statement comes amidst alarming statistics revealing a sharp rise in bandit attacks in Nigeria’s northwest, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property.
A United Nations survey showed a staggering 731 percent increase in bandit activities between 2018 and 2022, with over 8,300 deaths and nearly 10,000 abductions reported.
In Katsina alone, over 270 attacks and 680 fatalities were recorded in June 2024, with several villages suffering devastating raids, such as the assault on Layin Gara and Maikuma villages in April 2025.
One of the major sources of these attacks is the expansive Rugu Forest, which stretches across several states, including Katsina. Security officials have warned that the forest hosts over 100 armed camps, providing terrorists with ample cover to evade security forces.
The ongoing terror in these regions has also severely impacted local economies, with Katsina State attracting zero foreign direct investment in the first nine months of 2024, largely due to the pervasive insecurity.
At the dinner, President Tinubu also addressed the pressing economic challenges posed by insecurity. He noted that the investment climate would improve once security issues are resolved. “Investment is cowardly, and it will not go where there is banditry and terrorism. We will solve the problem together with the states and local councils,” he stressed.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with state and local governments to restore peace and security, stating, “Security is a national issue, not just at the local or regional levels.”
The President also revealed plans to upgrade infrastructure in the region, including the potential expansion of Katsina’s airport to boost economic growth and create jobs. Additionally, he assured that victims of terrorism would receive support to rebuild their lives.
