Chief Olusegun Osoba, former governor of Ogun State, has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that his presidency is a product of Yoruba leadership and collective effort.
Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South West Zone Assembly meeting held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, Osoba urged the nation to accept Tinubu’s leadership, assuring that he would serve another four years as a Yoruba son.
During his speech, Osoba traced Tinubu’s political journey, recalling a critical decision made by South West leaders in 2007.
According to him, that moment marked the beginning of Tinubu’s transition from Lagos State politics to a national role.
“Bola didn’t make himself the President of Nigeria; we did,” Osoba asserted.
He explained further, “Seventeen years ago, after his tenure as governor of Lagos State, we gathered at a luncheon organized by Alhaji Hamsa, our leader in the South West at that time.
It was there we collectively decided that Bola should move from Lagos politics to the national stage, to represent the interests of the Yoruba people at the topmost level of Nigerian politics.”
The assembly also reflected on the historical challenges faced by the Yoruba people in their pursuit of national leadership.
Osoba lamented the past struggles to place Yoruba leaders in the presidency, referencing political giants like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola, whose presidential ambitions were thwarted.
“Many of us here today worked tirelessly to support the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s quest for the presidency, but he wasn’t allowed to get there,” Osoba recounted.
He also noted, “Similarly, we rallied behind the late MKO Abiola’s presidential ambition, but we lost him, and with him, the opportunity.
They killed many of us because of our mission to make this country better. But we thank God that some of us are still alive to witness Bola Tinubu’s success.”
As Tinubu’s presidency unfolds, Osoba urged the Yoruba community and all Nigerians to support him, acknowledging that no leader is without flaws.
“Now that Bola Tinubu is there, I want to plead with all of you to accept his shortcomings.
“He will do better. After his first four-year term, he will serve another four years as a Yoruba son,” he stated.
Osoba’s call for support comes as Tinubu, who assumed office in 2023, continues to navigate the complexities of leading Nigeria through economic and political challenges.
His rise to the highest office in the land has been seen as a major milestone for Yoruba leadership, and according to Osoba, the South West stands firmly united behind Tinubu.
“The South West Assembly’s message is clear – the Yoruba leadership stands united behind Tinubu’s presidency and remains confident in his ability to deliver on his promises during his tenure,” Osoba concluded.
The assembly, which brought together influential political figures from the South West, highlighted the pivotal role they played in Tinubu’s political ascent and their continued commitment to supporting his leadership.
