Nigerian media personality and actress Omotunde Adebowale-David, popularly known as Lolo 1, has bravely opened up about her painful experience of being sexually assaulted by a male colleague in the broadcasting industry.
Speaking during an episode of the Say My Piece podcast, which she co-hosts, Lolo revealed that the assault left her with lasting emotional scars.
However, she admitted she was not ready to share all the details of the incident, fearing criticism for not speaking out sooner.
“I hardly ever say this, and I am not even ready to tell the full story. The stories of sexual assault. When I discussed it with my daughter yesterday, she held my hand and said, ‘Mummy, you’ve gone through so much,’” Lolo said, recalling the emotional weight of the experience.
She explained how the trauma still affects her daily life. “I have been raped only once in my life, and I was raped by a colleague. I see him every other day. Do you know how traumatised I am? When I see him, I just get into this momentary panic,” she shared.
Lolo also spoke about the emotional turmoil she faces whenever she encounters her attacker, a man she described as an established figure in the broadcast industry. She expressed concern over the public’s possible reaction if she were to name him.
“If a woman of my calibre named him, he’s an established person in the broadcast industry, won’t people say, ‘How come I didn’t speak about it for all these six years until now that he’s taking a prominent TV position?’” Lolo said.
The actress also discussed the common feelings of denial and self-blame that often follow sexual assault. “When sexual assault happens to women, the first thing to happen is denial. The next thing is self-blaming,” she added.
Lolo’s courage in sharing her story highlights the difficult journey many survivors of sexual assault face, particularly in industries where power dynamics can make it challenging to speak out.
