The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Hannatu Musawa, has described the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta as a national treasure and a model for Nigeria’s cultural and creative development.
Musawa made this known during her recent visit to the library as part of efforts to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for the culture and creative economy sector.
She said the visit was aimed at learning from the OOPL model and exploring ways to replicate its success in other parts of the country, starting with the proposed Abuja Creative City.
“We are trying to build on our history and culture. What I’ve seen here has inspired me. The framework used at OOPL will serve as a guide for other creative hubs across the country,” the minister said.
She revealed that several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed under the Renewed Hope project, including one with the Ogun State Government to strengthen grassroots cultural engagement.
“I leave here more inspired, proud, and empowered to deliver on the president’s vision for the sector,” she added.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who hosted the minister, highlighted the achievements of the library, including digitizing over 10 million documents and offering entrepreneurship training and grants.
Obasanjo, however, called for better infrastructure, especially regular power supply, to boost the library’s operations.
“If energy is no longer a problem, a third of our challenges will be solved,” he said.
He also stressed the need for better publicity and more partnerships to help the library reach a wider audience and fulfill its national purpose.
