At least 19 people lost their lives, and 11 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a tragic road accident that occurred on Saturday, January 11, in the Kwanan Maciji area of Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The victims, who had traveled from Kano State to attend a wedding in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, were returning home when the accident took place.
According to the Chairman of the Pankshin Local Government Area Emergency Management Committee, John Dasar, the passengers had taken an alternative route through Gindiri to Bauchi State when their vehicle veered off the road and crashed.
“In the aftermath of the crash, bystanders were helping to evacuate passengers from the vehicle when it suddenly caught fire,” Dasar revealed. “Unfortunately, 19 of the occupants were trapped and burnt beyond recognition. The driver and a few others managed to survive.”
The 11 survivors, some of whom sustained severe injuries, were rushed to the Pankshin General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the community, with families and friends of the victims mourning the devastating loss.
Authorities have commenced investigations into the cause of the crash, while emergency responders continue to assist the injured.
The incident underscores the recurring issue of road safety in Nigeria, as experts urge drivers to exercise caution, especially on poorly maintained routes.
