Tragedy struck in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday night when two students were crushed to death.

The victims, Chukwu Athanasius and Oladokun Oyindamola, students of the Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji, were on a bicycle along the busy Akure-Ondo highway when a Toyota sedan rammed into them.

According to the Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Emergency Response, Oriade Wellington Adebawo, the victims died at the scene of the accident.

While commiserating with the families of the victims, Adebawo, who condemned the reckless driving that caused the accident, warned drivers against speeding in the state.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Ondo State Axis, expressed sadness over the incident.

Describing the students’ deaths as devastating, the student body, in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Joshua Oluwarotimi, Secretary-General, Ajibola Oluwanishola, and Public Relations Officer, Blessing Kehinde, said, “We mourn the loss of two young lives taken far too soon. Chukwu Athanasius and Oladokun Oyindamola were not just students but individuals with unique talents, aspirations, and dreams.

“They had their whole lives ahead of them, and we can only imagine the great things they would have accomplished if given the chance.

“As we reflect on the lives of these young people, let us remember that every life is precious, and every person has the right to live safely and peacefully.”
