A tragic incident has occurred in Delta State where a 16-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his younger sister while playing with a firearm belonging to their father.

The unfortunate event was confirmed by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to the police spokesperson, the teenager was handling the weapon carelessly when it discharged, fatally striking his sister.

DSP Edafe disclosed that the children’s father, who identified himself as a hunter, admitted that his son had developed a habit of playing with his hunting rifle. On the day of the incident, the boy was reportedly toying with the gun when it suddenly went off.

“I pray and hope I don’t have to bring this kind of report to you again because it’s so sad,” Edafe wrote.

“The father claimed he is a hunter. His 16-year-old son, who always plays with his dad’s gun, on this fateful day was playing with the gun and shot his younger sister dead.”

The tragic development has sparked fresh concerns over gun safety and the need for responsible firearm storage, particularly in homes with children.

The police are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, even as the community grapples with the shock and grief of the devastating loss.

Further details, including the identities of the victim and the family, have not yet been disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
