Tragedy struck in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday as two women were confirmed dead after drowning in a pond, the Kano State Fire Service has said.

The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed the incident in a statement issued in Kano on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the fire service received a distress call at exactly 11:15 a.m. from a vigilance group in the area, alerting them to the unfortunate incident.

“The relatives of the victims informed the vigilance group that the women, who were staff of a Zobo (hibiscus drink) processing company, had gone to the pond to freshen up after closing from work and tragically drowned,” the statement read.

Abdullahi said rescue operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene, where the corpses of the two women were recovered from the water.

The remains, he noted, were later handed over to a police constable, Musa Garba, at the Gezawa Divisional Police Headquarters for further action.

The PRO used the opportunity to caution residents against bathing or engaging in any activities around open water bodies to avoid similar tragedies.

“The general public should avoid open waters and rivers, especially during unsupervised periods, to prevent such unfortunate incidents,” he added.

The identities of the deceased had not been made public as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has stirred sadness in the community, with residents calling for improved safety measures around local water bodies.
