A horrific accident unfolded on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, along Ago Okota Palace Way in Lagos, claiming the lives of five individuals, including a pregnant woman and two young children.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the shocking incident, revealing that it transpired when two men engaged in a perilous struggle for control of the steering wheel of a Sienna car.

Among these men were an off-duty police officer and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official.

The fatal collision occurred as these two men forcibly wrestled the steering from the private car’s driver.

Eyewitness Uche Muoneke recounted, “I saw the officer as he dragged the car’s steering with the driver, who refused to stop.

He dragged the steering with the driver until the car tragically struck a Keke (commercial tricycle) carrying a pregnant woman and her two children.”

In the wake of the devastating accident, pandemonium ensued, and some other police officers arrived at the scene, discharging their firearms indiscriminately.

Another eyewitness, Sunday Orji, revealed that the police officers deployed tear gas to deter onlookers from approaching the grisly accident site.

Meanwhile, fellow commercial tricycle drivers, who frequented the route, staged a protest in response to the tragic event.

The husband of the pregnant woman was reported to have collapsed upon witnessing the horrific fate that befell his wife and children.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and announced that an investigation had been initiated.

However, as of the time of this report, the exact number of individuals involved in the accident and the identities of those who lost their lives remain unconfirmed
