A  middle-aged farmer and hunter, identified as Mr. Claude Tonworio, reportedly took his own life using the Dane gun he used for hunting in the forest.

The Oloibiri Community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State is grappling with grief following a tragic incident over the weekend

According to local sources, Mr. Tonworio was in the process of transferring his harvested farm produce using a canoe when the incident occurred.

The father of six, who also worked as a civil servant, is believed to have taken his own life on August 26.

A family source shared details of the incident, suggesting that the bullet from the gun exploded, causing fatal injuries to Mr. Tonworio’s head. She stated,

“The whole community is still in shock over his death. He was a civil servant, but most weekends, he came to the village to stay with the family, and this Saturday was one of such visits. He left the family for the farm with his tools and hunter gun to hunt animals.”

“Mr. Tonworio usually went in a canoe to transport his harvested items. On Saturday, August 26, he went hunting as usual while his family awaited his return.

He returned and was attempting to transport the farm produce when a loud sound was heard. Initially, no one suspected that something had gone wrong until people went outside and discovered him lying on the ground, bleeding and struggling for survival.”

“All attempts to rush him to the hospital were unsuccessful, and he passed away during the journey. According to custom, his body was later taken to the waterside for rituals.

This incident is a heartbreaking tragedy for the family, and it raises concerns about the welfare of the six children he leaves behind.”

The state police spokesman, SP Asinim Butswat, stated that the incident had not yet been reported to the police when contacted for
