In a decisive military operation aimed at dismantling terrorist strongholds in the North East, troops attached to Operation Hadin Kai have reportedly neutralized over 70 terrorists, including three high-ranking commanders, but at a significant cost of 22 soldiers lost in action.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the operation, centered around the Timbuktu Triangle, a notorious enclave straddling Borno and Yobe states, saw intense ground and air assaults by Nigerian troops.
According to Major-General Edward Buba, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, the offensive led to the elimination of key terrorist figures, notably the Special Forces Commander TALHA, and commanders Mallam Umar and Abu Yazeed.
The military’s advance was met with fierce resistance from the terrorists who retaliated with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and suicide bombers, both on foot and in vehicles.
Despite these challenges, the troops managed to thwart many of these attacks, including shooting down drones used by the militants for reconnaissance.
Speaking on the operation, Major-General Buba emphasized the strategic importance of dismantling the Timbuktu Triangle, which had served as a hub for Islamic State-affiliated militants.
He confirmed that the clearance operation, initiated on January 16, 2025, is ongoing with the objective of completely eradicating terrorist presence in the region.
