Troops of the Nigerian military have intercepted a N13.7 million bribe offered by suspected terrorists in Plateau State and arrested 12 persons during a series of operations across the North Central region.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed this during a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja, describing the action of the soldiers as a display of rare integrity and professionalism in the face of criminal inducement.
Kangye explained that the troops were responding to a distress call along Jos-Sanga Road in Plateau when they intercepted two suspects attempting to flee in a bullet-ridden vehicle. Upon being stopped, the suspects reportedly tried to offer the sum of N13.7 million to avoid arrest, but the troops rejected the bribe and apprehended them.
“During the search, troops recovered the cash, weapons, ammunition, and a vehicle. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, and the recovered items are in custody,” Kangye stated.
He further revealed that the troops conducted offensive operations and responded to multiple distress calls across Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East Local Government Areas of Plateau State, as well as Kaura and Sanga LGAs in Kaduna State.
According to the defence spokesman, 12 suspects were arrested, several terrorists were neutralised, and three kidnapped victims were rescued during the operations. Recovered items included arms, ammunition, motorcycles, vehicles, and illicit drugs.
In a related operation, personnel of Operation Safe Haven arrested seven suspected militias and criminals during patrols in Barkin Ladi and Jos South LGAs of Plateau, and in Wamba and Sanga LGAs of Nasarawa and Kaduna States.
Commending the troops, Kangye said: “Their resilience and professionalism remain crucial in our effort to rid the nation of criminal elements. We urge the public to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.”
He assured that the military remains committed to transparency and timely updates as operations continue across troubled areas.
“We cannot do this alone. The cooperation of Nigerians, especially the media, is critical in sustaining our success,” Kangye added.
The arrest and refusal of the bribe, security analysts say, demonstrate growing discipline and accountability within the ranks of the armed forces amid the nation’s fight against terrorism.
