Tragedy struck along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State as a police inspector, Afolabi Adeola, lost his life after being crushed by a speeding truck at a security checkpoint near the Judiciary Complex in Abeokuta.

The incident, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, involved a fully loaded truck reportedly carrying about 900 bags of cement. Witnesses said the truck was approaching the checkpoint at high speed when it crashed into a stationary truck that had stopped in compliance with police checks, before subsequently ramming into Inspector Adeola, who was on official duty.

Inspector Adeola sustained severe injuries from the impact and was rushed to a hospital in Lagos. He, however, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, shortly after undergoing an X-ray scan.

A security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, said officers from the traffic unit of the police visited the scene, documented the incident, and recovered both the offending truck and the stationary one to a nearby station for further investigation.

Sources revealed that the driver and other suspects involved in the fatal crash are expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, July 3.

When contacted for official comments, the Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, declined to provide immediate details, stating, “Please wait for the official press release.”

As of the time of filing this report, no formal statement had been issued by the command.

The death of Inspector Adeola has thrown the police community into mourning, with colleagues describing him as a dedicated and disciplined officer who was committed to duty till the very end.
