Truck drivers on Wednesday barricaded the Lokoja-Ajaokuta highway in Kogi State to protest the shooting of a fellow driver and his assistant by security operatives.
The incident occurred near the Ganaja flyover in Ajaokuta Local Government Area when the security personnel reportedly opened fire on the truck occupants for allegedly refusing to stop at a checkpoint.
Though both victims sustained gunshot injuries, no life was lost as they were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
In protest, angry truck drivers used their vehicles to block the highway, causing a major gridlock that left many commuters stranded.
Civil servants and other road users were forced to trek long distances to reach their destinations, while others returned home.
“I had to trek from Governor Idris Wada Estate, about seven kilometres, to my office. It was a nasty and frustrating experience,” said Aliyu Dansabe, a civil servant affected by the disruption.
Normalcy was eventually restored after military personnel were deployed to disperse the protesters and clear the road around noon.
Spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident, saying the situation was under control.
