The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has disclosed that notorious terrorist kingpin, Bello Turji, has expressed readiness to surrender amidst intensified military operations targeting his network.
However, General Musa emphasized that individuals who have killed innocent citizens must face justice.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, General Musa revealed that the military’s sustained onslaught has significantly weakened Turji’s operations, forcing him to reconsider his position.
“We have taken out his second in command and most of his lieutenants. He is now releasing most of the people under him and has expressed a willingness to surrender,” Musa stated.
Despite Turji’s overtures, the Defence Chief insisted that surrender does not absolve perpetrators of heinous crimes.
“Anybody who has killed innocent citizens must go. People like Turji should not be allowed to stay,” Musa declared.
The military, under Operation Fansan Yamma, has ramped up efforts to dismantle Turji’s terror network in Sokoto and Zamfara states.
On Wednesday, troops neutralized Turji’s second in command, Aminu Kanawa, and inflicted critical injuries on key allies, including Turji’s younger brother, Dosso, and close associate, Danbokolo.
A statement from the Defence Director, Edward Buba, confirmed the elimination of Turji’s key commanders, such as Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, and Kabiru Gebe.
Over 24 fleeing terrorists were also neutralized in operations around Gebe and Isa local government areas of Sokoto State, as well as Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State.
General Musa acknowledged the challenges of tracking terrorists embedded in communities, noting the delays in receiving actionable intelligence.
“They are within the communities, and by the time information reaches us, they have often moved. Despite this, our troops have achieved significant success,” he said.
The military’s intensified operations underscore its resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and restore security in affected regions.
However, General Musa’s stance on accountability reaffirms the government’s commitment to justice for victims of terrorism.
