Two brothers, Ibrahim Yusuf, 62, and Samaila Yusuf, 48, have been remanded in prison custody for allegedly murdering their 85-year-old father, Yusuf Kwada.
The brothers confessed to the crime, accusing their father of practising witchcraft.
The tragic incident took place in Zah village, Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The Chief Magistrate Court in Yola, presided over by Bilkisu Tijjaji, ordered the remand of the brothers on Wednesday.
During the court session, the brothers admitted to killing their father by striking him on the head with a stick.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), the incident occurred on June 9, 2024.
The brothers reportedly lured their elderly father into the bush, where they brutally clubbed him to death and left his body to decompose.
The heinous act was brought to light when Amina Ibrahim, the daughter of the deceased, reported the matter to the police on July 1, 2024.
Prosecution counsel ASP Ezra Bulus informed the court that the defendants conspired to murder their father and abandoned his remains.
Bulus highlighted the gravity of the offence and emphasized the need for the legal advice of the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).
He requested the court to adjourn the case to allow for further investigation and the DPP’s input.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the brothers confessed to the crime when questioned by the chief magistrate.
Ibrahim Yusuf, the elder brother, admitted, “Truly, we killed our father. We led him into the bush and, while there, we hit his head with a big stick and he died.”
He explained that their father was accused of using diabolic means to kill six of his grandchildren and other community members.
The brothers claimed that their father’s actions had brought shame and hurt to their family, leading them to take the drastic step.
“We decided to kill him because he used diabolic ways to kill six of his grandchildren in the family.
“He also killed some people in our community.
“Everyone is speaking ill of our family; they call him a witch, and we can’t stand the shame and hurt he has brought upon us,” the 62-year-old son stated.
The court ordered the remand of Ibrahim and Samaila Yusuf and adjourned the case to July 30 for mention or the receipt of the DPP’s advice.
The offences they are accused of contravene Sections 160 and 191 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
