Two of the 25 female students abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, on Monday have reportedly escaped from their captors.
Hussaini Aliyu, an official from Danko Wasagu Local Government Area, told PLATFORM TIMES that the girls ran away as the bandits were leading them into the bush, crossing farmlands to freedom.
“They are back and safe. One of the girls sustained a leg injury while fleeing and is receiving medical treatment,” Aliyu said.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, claimed the life of the school’s vice principal, Hassan Makuku. Ali Shehu, a security guard, was also shot during the raid and later died in hospital from his injuries, police confirmed.
Nafi’u Kotarkoshi, Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi, described the assault as a “brutal and inhumane act targeting innocent schoolgirls.”
In a statement, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said President Bola Tinubu has condemned the attack and ordered an immediate and comprehensive rescue operation.
“The President reiterates the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of Nigerians, particularly schoolchildren,” Idris added.
Bello Muhammad Sani, Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, said additional police tactical units, supported by military personnel and local vigilance groups, are combing the forests and suspected escape routes.
“We are leaving no stone unturned to rescue the remaining abducted students and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
The abduction underscores growing security challenges in northern Nigeria, where schools and children have increasingly been targeted by criminal gangs.
Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining 23 girls and provide support to victims of the attack.
