The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Kano State has arrested two young women for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse.
The suspects, identified as Maryam Ali and Hauwa Musa, both aged between 19 and 20, were intercepted during routine security checks at the facility on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
Confirming the arrest in a statement on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Command of the NCoS, Musbahu Lawan Nassarawa, said the women, who are residents of Kano State, were apprehended while trying to gain access to the custodial centre with substances suspected to be illegal drugs.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs were meant to be supplied to inmates inside the correctional facility, an act he described as a serious breach of the Service’s regulations.
“The suspects were arrested during a routine security screening with substances suspected to be illicit drugs. Preliminary findings indicate that the items were intended for distribution to
inmates within the facility,” Nassarawa said.
He added that the two suspects have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution in line with existing laws.
Nassarawa stressed that the offence is punishable under Nigerian law, noting that the Correctional Service operates a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and other illegal activities within custodial centres.
Reaffirming the Service’s commitment to security and discipline, he said measures were being continuously strengthened to prevent the introduction of prohibited items into correctional facilities.
The NCoS spokesperson also warned members of the public to adhere strictly to visitation rules, vowing that anyone found violating the regulations would be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.
The arrest comes amid renewed efforts by correctional authorities to curb drug abuse and other criminal activities within custodial centres across the country.
