Ukpor Community has defeated Unubi in the final of the inaugural Unity Cup in Nnewi South LGA of Anambra State.

The competition was played by 10 towns from Nnewi South LGA of Anambra State to promote unity in the LGA.

Ukpor beat Unubi 3-0 to win the competition and were crowned the first-ever champions.

The winners, runners-up and third place were given different categories of prizes.

Each of the remaining seven towns also got recognition for their participation and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Speaking to newsmen, Kingsley Obiukwu, noted that the competition was designed not only to showcase the pool of talent in the communities but also to foster harmony and a stronger sense of togetherness among the participating towns: Ukpor, Unubi, Ezinifite, Amichi, Osumenyi, Akwa-Ihedi, Ebenator, Utuh, Azigbo and Ekwulumili.

“For us, the Unity Cup is more than just a football tournament, it is a platform for unity and collaboration in Nnewi South. Through football, we brought together the towns in a spirit of shared purpose, passion and oneness.

“This tournament showcased the best teams from the participating towns and they all put up impressive performances and displayed healthy competition.

“The Unity Cup is here to stay and it is a great reminder that when we come together—whether through sports or community initiatives—there is no limit to what we can achieve,” Obiukwu concluded.

Also speaking, The Unity Cup Planning Committee Chairman, Mr Johnpaul Onyekineso, lauded the winning town and all the participating communities stating that the competition is a statement of victory for all the communities involved because it has helped to foster a sense of shared identity and pride in the communities.

“We celebrate our champions Ukpor for their show of tenacity and sportsmanship and everybody who was involved in the success of this tournament and for maintaining the peace enjoyed throughout the tournament. This has certainly strengthened the bonds between our towns.

Also, one of the players from the winning town, Fedilis Ubah said, “This tournament has truly been a unifying experience for us, bringing together people from all walks of life to our beautiful town. Through this event, we’ve had the opportunity to reignite the spirit of love and brotherhood that defines our community,” he said.
