In a groundbreaking announcement, the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) is set to require all prospective students to undergo drug tests as part of the admission process.
The Vice-Chancellor of UniAbuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah, unveiled this initiative during the university’s 27th pre-convocation briefing on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
Collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), UniAbuja aims to combat drug abuse among students and provide rehabilitation where needed.
Prof. Na’allah emphasized the importance of assessing students’ drug status to ensure a drug-free environment on campus.
Remarkably, students found involved in drug abuse will not face expulsion but instead receive support for rehabilitation, thanks to the partnership with the NDLEA.
This announcement coincided with news that 7,128 students are scheduled to graduate during the upcoming convocation on Saturday, October 7.
Among them are 100 PhD graduates, 326 academic Masters graduates, and 346 Professional Masters graduates.
The academic achievements include 40 students graduating with First Class honors, 474 with Second Class Upper, 944 with Second Class Lower, 174 with Third Class, and one with a Pass degree.
It’s noteworthy that UniAbuja has banned the awarding of Pass degrees.
Furthermore, UniAbuja plans to bestow an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Letters upon Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas, Houston, in recognition of his contributions to the institution’s development and its impact on African universities.
In a bid to expand educational horizons, the Vice-Chancellor announced the inclusion of Russian Language in the general courses that students must pass before graduating.
This move aims to make new knowledge accessible to students and aligns with UniAbuja’s global approach to education, which includes the offering of languages such as Japanese, French, and Portuguese.
Additionally, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has given its approval for 26 new academic programs at UniAbuja, with some slated to commence in the 2023/2024 academic session.
These programs cover a diverse range of fields, including Nursing, Communication and Media Studies, Pharmacy, Tourism and Hospitality, and Agricultural Engineering, among others.
