In a significant initiative spanning three years, UNICEF has successfully trained approximately 285,000 children orphaned by the Boko Haram insurgency, as well as vulnerable children, in basic literacy and numeracy.
This endeavor, known as the Teaching at the Right Level initiative, was made possible through funding from the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office of the British government.
The project, now in its third year, aims to provide safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning opportunities for children, with a special focus on girls, those with disabilities, and those affected by conflict.
Mustapha Shehu, the Education Officer at UNICEF’s Maiduguri Field Office, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the approach, addressing educational challenges caused by conflict while prioritizing inclusivity and quality learning for vulnerable children.
As part of the initiative, 2,800 teachers were trained in the Teaching at the Right Level method in Maiduguri, Jere, and Konduga.
These teachers, stationed in arranged open spaces outside traditional classrooms, conducted two-hour daily sessions with approximately 50 pupils each. This unconventional approach aimed to facilitate fast learning.
During a tour of some benefiting schools in commemoration of the International Day of Education, Mustapha Shehu highlighted the significance of the initiative in tackling the educational impact of conflict.
Ngari Bukar, the Head Teacher of Mohammed Aji Goni Laminu Primary School in Jere Local Government Area, one of the 140 benefiting schools, noted that over 50% of the children benefiting from the programme are orphans whose parents fell victim to Boko Haram insurgents.
